The Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999, promulgates strict action against any student who indulges in ragging:

"Ragging" means display of disorderly conduct, doing of any act which causes or is likely to cause physical, psychological harm or raise apprehension or fear or shame or embarrassment to a student in any educational institution and includes.

Teasing, abusing, threatening or playing practical jokes on, or causing hurt to, such student; orAsking a student to do any act or perform something which such student will not, in the ordinary course, willingly, do. Penalties include fine/suspension/dismissal and/or imprisonment and being debarred from seeking admission to any other institution. The punishment may also take the shape of - Withholding / withdrawing scholarships / fellowships and other benefits.

  • Debarring from representation in eventswithholding resultsCancellation of Admission.
  • Suspension from attending classes.
  • Debarring from appearing any test / examination or other evaluation process.
  • Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet, tournament, youth festival etc..Suspension / expulsion from the hostel.
  • Rustication from the institution for period ranging from 1 to 4 semesters.
  • Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution.
  • Fine of rupees 25,000/-
  • Collective punishment : When the persons committing or abetting the crime of ragging are not identified, the institution shall resort to collective punishment as a deterrent to ensure community pressure on the potential raggers.
